Frida created 55 self-portraits. When asked why, she replied “Because I am so often alone…because I am the subject I know best.” Her self-portraits are her autobiography.

At 22, she married artist Diego Rivera. Of their on-again-off-again, love-hate relationship of that marriage she remarked, “I suffered 2 grave accidents in my life…One in which a streetcar knocked me down and the other was Diego.”
